Definition:  A figure of speech in which a term or phrase is compared using like or as, as opposed to a metaphor.

Example from The Pearl:  "...eight small misshapen seed pearls, as ugly and gray as little ulcers..." (p.11).

Example by me:  It was as miraculous as winning the lottery.
